Fantasy Village
Rääkkylä Sports Field, Rääkkylä, Finland, February 2005

Fantasy village was a snow and ice sculpture project which took place in Rääkkylä Sports Field in February 2005. A wide range of groups from the Rääkkylä area participated, for example community, school, special needs and imigrants. The groups were introduced to the project via model making and design workshops.

A technique of compacting snow into wooden-box moulds was used to make the main shape, and from these moulds the fantasy village was created using saws, knives, rasps, hard wood and imagination. Also, a number of snow hills, formed while clearing road-ways into the sports field, provided sound foundation for carving from. Fifty-five snow sculptures were created to form Fantasy Village.
